INNOVATIVE SLING TAPS INTO PROGRESSIVE PARENTING
Published:  17 October, 2008

The weight of consumer and expert opinion is now behind carrying babies for longer, and one product at the forefront of this shift, theBabaSling, has modernised an ancient tradition to capitalise on the zeitgeist of current parenting.

It's even more appropriate that, in the world of paternal involvement and growing circulation of Fathers' Quarterly (FQ Magazine), this product has been developed by two young men.

BABIES LEFT ALONE

Research shows that children raised in non-westernised cultures are held, carried and touched much more frequently than in Euro-American families. In the UK, babies spend on average two-thirds of their time alone, sitting in car seats, prams, bouncy chairs, cots or swings, compared with many cultures where babies are carried in slings, without being put down, for the first six months of their life.

The result, recent research indicates, is a mild form of sensory deprivation, and that has an impact on both babies' and their parents' lives.

LESS CRYING

"Research trials have shown that carrying an infant regularly in a properly-designed sling such as theBabaSling reduced daytime crying by 43 per cent and night crying by 51 per cent," Hunkizer, A and Barr, R.G. 1986 Pediatrics Vol:77.

"Far from being limiting, as people think, wearing a sling is hugely empowering. It leaves both hands free to get on with other things and makes going out and about easier and more spontaneous." Says Daniel Lucas co-founder of BabaSlings Ltd.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Baby carrying is totally safe but it's important to choose a sling carefully. It must provide the correct support for the new-born baby, be comfortable, and safe for mum, dad or caregivers and be adaptable as the baby grows.

theBabaSling is perfectly designed as an over-the-shoulder sling for use from newborn, where the baby is fully supported in a horizontal position, exactly as they were in the womb. This is good for the baby's spine, great for bonding, and also perfect for breastfeeding mums.

As the baby grows and is able to hold his or her head (around 4-6 months), the sling can be used to support the baby in an upright position, one of seven suggested positions.

Daniel Lucas is quick to point out that theBabaSling fulfils a very different niche than the standard upright carriers. He says - "theBabaSling can be used from birth to toddler in a number of different positions. This versatility and ease of use allows parents' the freedom to carry in any stage of their baby's development.

KEEP THEM CLOSE

Research increasingly shows that slings create a closeness and interaction between parent and child.

Parents choosing to follow the baby carrying concept can be reassured that they are parenting in a style that helps to raise physically and emotionally healthy children.

The child carrying revolution is well under way, and continues to gather momentum.
