Innovations for new generations
Published:  17 October, 2008

Last month at Kind + Jugend 2008 six companies were presented with a special Innovation Award to commend the design and development of their unique products based on their innovative character, safety, user-friendliness, creativity as well as the finished quality. So take note now as we present the winners...

In the ‘World of Baby Furniture' category the award went to Osann GmbH for their product Kaboost, which increases the height of an adult chair in a matter of seconds. Young children can then sit at the table at the right height and enjoy feeling immediately bigger. The product, which is fitted under the chair legs, can be flexibly adapted to various chairs' gaps. Depending on the size of the child, the adult chair can be increased by two levels. The juding panel for the award spoke highly of the product's stable, safe and secure design, and easy-to-handle implementation.

In the ‘World of Mobile Baby' category the Taga 2008 product from Dutch company Taga B.V. emerged as the winner. The judging panel was impressed by the unique synthesis between a bicycle and children's pushchair. Certainly no-one can deny it's innovation. The robust bicycle with children's seat can be easily converted into a pushchair and vice versa. The idea is that parents can quickly take to the road with their child on board and when they get to the shops, they can then conveniently push their child along in the pushchair. The company says that as a result, the environmentally-friendly combination of bicycle and child seat makes daily life and routine considerably easier, particularly in urban areas.

‘The Britax Baby-Safe Sleeper' was declared the winner in the ‘World of Baby Safety' category. The baby carrier or sleeper enables small babies from birth up to the age of around 5 months, to be transported in the car in a lying, horizontal position, and is particularly recommended for ergonomic reasons. When fitted to the pushchair, the backrest can be also be adjusted at a slanting angle. Comprehensive protection for babies is ensured by the carrier's robust shell, a roll-over protection system, a safety rotation system, which in the event of an accident, enables the carrier to rotate against the direction of travel, and a safety system, which prevents incorrect use in the car. The judges praised the very ‘cocoon-like', all-round protection of the baby sleeper as well as the possibility of moving the product from the car to the pushchair with one hand and vice versa. In the UK the rrp is £169.99 rising to £179.99 in late October.

Sock ons from the company of the same name, Sock ons Ltd, has come top in the ‘World of Baby Textiles' category. According to the judges, it involves an equally ingenious as well as simple solution for a tiresome problem, namely babies' constantly losing their socks when they rub them off at home or out and about. Because Sock ons, which are similar to normal socks, but without a toe and heel, are worn over the socks, they keep the real ones in place. They cannot be pulled or rubbed off the feet when the baby tugs on them or they begin to crawl or walk.

In the ‘World of Baby Toys' category the award went to Tessell Puzzle from the IWASHIN Design Corporation, based in Japan. The large foam puzzle can be pieced together to form a large play-mat using the mosaic technique, but can also be transformed into a rocking horse and other animal figures. Thanks to the material, the puzzle is very stable and nonetheless extremely light. The judges honoured the original idea of designing a very versatile toy with different functions, which stimulates imagination and promotes geometrical understanding.

The company with the name A Real Cool World, in the ‘World of Baby Care' category received the Kind + Jugend Innovation Award for their new Flexibath. This baby bath tub in plastic can be folded up manually in one easy step. At the same time, the plug changes colour as soon as the water has reached the right temperature. The key factor in the judges' decision was the fact that the product is so suitable for travel, because it is space-saving and more hygienic than a hand wash basin, which is often the next best thing.
