Nearly a million children under the age of 15 go to a hospital emergency department in the UK each year after a home accident, and half of those are under five.
This month a conference by the Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents will explore how far regulation should go in tackling home accidents, which in total result in more than 4,000 deaths and 2.7 million people going to hospital in the UK each year.
The National Home Safety Congress will consider how to strike the right balance between ‘complacency and paranoia', which many parents find difficult to find. Errol Taylor, RoSPA Deputy Chief Executive, says, ‘Ideally, we need our homes to be as safe as necessary rather than as safe as possible.'
The market for home safety in the nursery trade is increasing. Just as the message to always use a car seat when travelling by car, has become embedded in the national psyche, manufacturers and distributors of safety gates, cupboard locks, harnesses and the vast array of equipment that falls into this category, need to continue to raise awareness of the need to prevent accidents at home through public relations campaigns and advertising.
Notable new safety items at the BPA Show included the new Mr Men TV Show Child Safety Kit which ties in with the Channel 5 series, and Kiddysmart's 2-in-1 Harness Buddy which gives parents reins and an active toddler a choice of 16 animal backpacks.
