Car Seats & Accessories
Published:  11 November, 2008

Following the BPA Show it's clear that the major car seat manufacturers have been very busy in Research and Development, because there were certainly some innovating new products to see.

If you were at the show, you couldn't fail to see the new ‘Nurse' billboard at the Jane stand. ‘Nurse', despite what you may initially think, is a new urban range of essentials at value prices, launching in 2009.

It includes no less than eight, yes eight different pushchairs, six separate travel systems and nine new car seats. In Group 0/ 0+ baby carriers, the USP of the Capazo, Duplo and Piccola 9 all slightly different) is their ability to operate as pram tops yet double as first car seats too. Watch out for the weight brackets though on these first two as in certain circumstances they are only suitable for babies weighing 10kg or less.

On the Britax stand, the makers are very keen to highlight how special their unique ISOfix brackets are. Oh no, you may think you'd got the hang of isofix but now, I'm afraid it gets even more complicated - they are not all the same, not at all. Britax models use a ‘Pivot Link' system which reduces the child's forward movement in the case of a collision, and now the additional foot prop with Group 1 seats such as the Safefix Plus, gives extra stability.

Kiddy, a family-owned German business that is big in Korea but relatively unknown over here, has got much to shout about. Two of its flagship designs have come out top in two of Germany's 2007 stringent tests - the Stiftung Warentest, and one by ADAC. In fact the ‘Comfort Pro' Group 1,2,3 design, and the ‘Infinity Pro' Group 1 seat, beat even Isofix car seats in the tests for safety. The main point of difference is that instead of using a harness across the shoulders and buckling at the chest, both seats make use of a removable ‘bumper' or shield which fits neatly across the child's lap. Combined with impactabsorbing ‘honeycombe' materials making up the body itself, plus head protection, this revolutionary shape appears to be very safe indeed and reduces the risk whiplash and chest crushing injuries.

Concord report excellent sales of their Carbon Neo travel system, helped mostly they believe by the celebrity take up of the top end model. They are busy fine tuning a brand new Group 1 car Seat, the Transformer, which is scheduled to be launched early next year.

In accessories the Minnie Moo ‘cow print' car seat liner from Diddi, made an impact at Birmingham. The quilted cover adds comfort and helps absorb perspiration away from a baby in the car. Each comes with a sun canopy too.
