This year’s Harrogate Nursery Fair saw the launch of BPA Retail
Published:  01 May, 2007

BPA Retail will provide a much needed link between the manufacturers or distributors of baby products and the end consumer. The ultimate aim of the scheme will be to help protect the consumer with its stringent criteria for membership, enabling the public to make an informed choice when choosing a nursery retailer from which to buy their products.

Unlike many areas where a retailer may feel that more regulations can be a hindrance, the standard that must be fulfilled to become a BPA Retail member is welcomed. This is because consumers will be reassured when buying from a BPA Retail member and have the confidence that the safety of their child is of maximum importance.

Members who have proven they meet the required criteria will be able to display a membership certificate and window stickers clearly indicating their status to the public. This simple measure will be a useful marketing tool for retailers. In addition, the BPA Retail association will also provide services such as advice on insurance and will make consumer data available to members.

As well as the launch, Harrogate saw two landmark events for the scheme. The very first member signed up and the BPA Retail Council held its inaugural meeting. This council will be responsible for much of the decision making processes and recommendations that will be passed on to members.

The first member to sign up was Sarah Evans of Ladybugs in Poynton, Cheshire, who was presented with a bottle of Champagne from BPA Chief Executive, Peter White. She said: "Becoming a BPA Retail member was an easy decision. It’ll be a huge boost for our store and demonstrate to customers that they are buying from a name they can trust."
