Welcome to the March issue of Nursery Industry!
Published:  15 March, 2007

March is the issue in which we traditionally preview the Harrogate Nursery Fair and this year is no exception and you will find everything you need to know about the show from the special Supplement included with this issue. There’s lots to see and lots to do so make sure you allow plenty of time.

Hotels and B&B’s aren’t that expensive in Harrogate so why not treat yourself to a more leisurely visit – you know you’re worth it!

In addition, there are a number of features both on industry issues and the vital products without which we could all go home! On page 8 we have our Opinion page where Carol Ainge is concerned about the changes to the Stairgate standard. The other Opinion was written by myself after receiving a call from a concerned retailer and concerns trading on eBay. It seems that everyone is now doing it, but looking at the site again, it is obvious that there are many other well known names trading there. Is this a good way of getting rid of surplus stock and returns which in turn will control supplier costs and ultimately the cost of product or is it a back door into internet trading? One thing that is clear is what isn’t! You’ll recognise few supplier companies or high street shops on eBay. Everyone is hiding behind other names. I’d appreciate your comments whether for or against eBay trading.

It sometimes feels that everything in America is somehow bigger and better than in the UK. So it was very heartening to read the recent issue of Consumer Reports (the American equivalent to Which? magazine). Under test were rear-facing carriers that snap in and out of a base, which is installed in a car using the vehicle's safety belts or LATCH attachments (similar to our ISOfix). If a seat failed the new tests, devised by Consumer Reports, they tested for compliance with the federal car-seat standard. The results were quite staggering. In the end they felt they could only recommend two seats – one from Graco and one from Baby Trend. But what I like most was the comment that "infant car seats sold in Europe undergo more rigorous testing than do models sold in the U.S. Indeed, when we crash-tested an infant seat we bought in England, it was the best in our tests." This was followed by an extensive feature on how in Europe we do things so much better!
