For many years, a parent would buy toys in a toy shop but more recently, there seems to have been a trend towards buying toys for a young baby in a nursery shop. No research appears to have been done on the reasons for this. Is it because so many toys are now sold in large stores such as Toys R Us, Argos and the major supermarkets and parents find it a little intimidating to identify what they might need for the newest member of their family? Certainly more toy companies are targeting nursery shops and more baby toy ranges are appearing.
Toys for this age group are a rather unusual group of products. The ultimate user of the toy is baby, but unfortunately, he or she doesn't get any say in what toys are bought for him. All they can do is react and either play or not play as much with a particular toy. The person who makes all these decisions is the adult - the parent, grandparent or someone who is buying a gift. They all have their own agendas, their own preconceptions about what is needed. Toys can often be an impulse buy for many parents, especially those with an 'aaah' factor. Why is it that so many kids end up with stacks of cute soft toys which actually have very little play value! Something labelled as 'educational' is often chosen although most toys for this age group are educational. Play is a child's 'work' and toys are the tools children use in play. It is an essential part of growing up. Toys do more than entertain and keep a child busy and quiet. Playing with toys helps a child develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. Toys are a vital part of learning and growing and are invaluable to a child's development into a mature, confident adult.
