When customers come into the shop looking for a cloth nappy, do you just point to the stand over there or do you talk them through the pros and cons of the various types? For some time it has been good enough to stock one sort of cloth nappy. Now cloth nappies are mainstream, retailers need to offer a choice.
So what is the choice?
The first decision must centre around cost. The cheapest washable nappies are usually prefolds and terries. The old fashioned terries are very absorbent and quick to dry though not so easy to put on a wriggling baby. Over the long term, one size nappies are economical, but for a mum with a small new born baby, they might be rather bulky and she might prefer less leakage and the fit that comes with using a smaller nappy. At the other end, a larger baby might grow out of the one size before they grow out of nappies so Mum may need to buy some extra large nappies. All-in-one nappies are the most like disposables to use, but generally they are more expensive.
But cost isn’t everything. Shaped nappies are easier to put on. Some nappies come with velcro or popper fastenings. Velcro gives more adjustment (but make sure Mum fastens the nappy before putting in the wash). Poppers can be better for older babies who may like undoing the nappy themselves!! Nappy pins are now old hat – the modern equivalent is to use Nappi Nippas.
Containment (such a lovely word!) is generally better with two part nappies. Then there’s the time taken to dry the nappy. Of course, Mum could pop it into the tumble drier but that adds to the cost and it isn’t that environment friendly. Generally those which unfold dry quickest.
Absorbency is another key feature as the manufacturers of disposables are keen to advertise, but nappies should be changed regularly – at least at every feed time. If more is needed there are booster liners available.
Wraps are an important part of the nappy system. Wraps can be pull-ons, fasten with poppers or with velcro. They can be made with from a variety of fabrics. Some fabrics are breathable, some not; some can be washed at high temperatures, some need lower even cold temps. The final consideration for wraps is the fashion aspect! There are some very attractive ones about – just right for the fashion conscious infant!
