Baby carriers can sometimes be a secondary consideration for many new parents, but this can only be an opportunity for retailers, increasing the opportunity of making a sale as they explain the pros and cons of the various types.
One of the main features to be considered is the adaptability of the sling under consideration. Some carriers are suitable only for carrying babies for a few months in a single position. Others are more adaptable. The most important carrying position is the familiar ‘facing towards the parent'. However, what other positions are considered important?
In recent research, the Wilkinet Survey asked people who use or plan to use a baby carrier or sling which of the following positions are most important.
Another consideration is the condition known as plagiocephaly or more commonly Flat Head Syndrome.
Despite the fact that it is estimated to affect around half of all babies under the age of one, recent research by Wilkinet shows that less than one per cent of new mums are aware of the condition.
Dawn Telfer from Plagiocephalycare, a support group set up to help those affected, said, "One of the best ways of preventing and treating plagiocephaly is by using an upright baby carrier because it avoids pressure on the skull. Using the helmets, one of the iconic images of the condition is always a last resort." Recognising this simple benefit could help persuade parent to buy - as well as showing them you are a valuable source of information!
