Welcome
Harrogate was certainly bigger, but my lasting impression is one of pushchairs!
Published:  15 April, 2008

I think I can be forgiven for finding the sheer number of stands with wheeled goods quite astonishing - you have to remember that I haven't been to Harrogate for two years. The competition between brands is evident in the amazing amount of thought that's clearly gone in to most of them, which can only be a good thing for shoppers.

It was really lovely to see so many familiar faces and also to meet new innovators which is exactly what the nursery market needs to offer consumers the very best products available. It was a good show, and I hope you've come back full of ideas.

But as we get into the swing of 2008, I'm sure you're all too aware of the simmering signs of an economic downturn.     Everyone knows that retail gets hit hard in a recession, so now is the time to really start planning how your business can cope with lower or fewer margins. Fortunately new and existing parents will always need ‘essential' items so concentrate your efforts on the must-have buys like car seats, wheeled goods, cots, feeding equipment and bath time accessories, and make sure you have enough but not too much stock. Make the most of  your most reliable brands, and make sure everyone on the shop floor is fully up to date with their product information.
