Sally Wilkins
Published:  16 July, 2008

Sally Wilkins first designed a new baby carrier back in 1978 for her third baby, Gideon. Three years later she'd come up with the Wilkinet Carrier for her next child. Today Gideon himself runs this popular, family business

Where were you brought up & what was your childhood like?

My childhood was split between the West Midlands and West Wales. My parents were 1960s throwbacks... so lentil bake, goats milk (freshly squeezed!) and Steiner schools were all dabbled with (with plenty of resistance from all eight children).  Having such a big family meant there was always someone to play and fight with.

What did you want to be when you left school?

I'd always dreamt of being an inventor when I was growing up - but then forgot about it as I approached university and was thinking more along the lines of practical jobs like 'Translator,' 'Journalist,' 'Diplomat.'  I now get to spend a few days a  month on new product development - so maybe I got my wish after all.

Did you take a degree course?

I did one of those 'still-not-sure-what-I'm-going-to-do' sorts of courses; History at Cardiff.

What was your first proper job?

I went straight from University into a Market Research agency; Millward Brown, where I stayed long enough to get a qualification and the MR Bug.  I still enjoy using the skills and tools on Wilkinet projects.

When did you get involved with Wilkinet?

My mum, Sally, designed the baby carrier in the early 80s and ran the business for about 25 years.  About three years ago I asked if could start working with her and I was handed full control in 2006.

What part do you enjoy most about the business?

I love being able to be home in time to spend the evening with the children. I love working to promote a product I passionately believe in. I've used the Wilkinet baby carrier with my children and know how much of an emotional life-saver it is.

What do you do when you're not working?

Spend as much time as I can with my wife and kids.  I also am actively involved in my local church and occasionally am caught doing a bit of cross-country running... just for fun.
