Babybase Wholesale has been looking after retailers big and small since 1998 and from the way the business has grown, it is obvious that they are doing something right. Originally Babybase opened 21 years ago as a retailer and it is in this role that Kate Shrubb learned all about the nursery trade. The retail shop finally closed in September 2007 but the product knowledge and customer awareness that it bred are still with the company. "We are always happy to give advice and help to our customers" says Kate. "We know a lot about the products we sell".
Babybase is proud to be an old fashioned wholesaler with old fashioned values. They stock a very wide range of products made by all sorts of different manufacturers and from this range you can pick as much or as little as you want. There is no minimum order and the carriage paid value is only £200 for most of the country. Customers can buy exactly the quantities they require rather than having to adhere to box sizes or order minimums. "It also means that they don't have to hold large stocks of expensive items such as cots or pushchairs. They can take an order one morning and have the item delivered the next day" Kate explained.
Next day delivery is standard at Babybase. As long as they receive your order before 1pm by 'phone, fax or email, goods will be sent out to you for delivery the next day. "One of the things that used to annoy me as a retailer was the length of time it took to receive orders from suppliers. I was determined as a wholesaler that we would get goods to customers the next day and make their lives a whole lot easier".
Babybase is pleased to be a distributor for some of the largest and best suppliers in the trade: East Coast, Cosatto, Britax, Saplings, First Years, Lemaze, Dr. Brown's, Avent and many, many more. The latest addition to the range is Medela. "Medela produce the breast pumps that are recommended by hospitals and midwives" Kate told me. "We are delighted that they have asked us to distribute their goods to the independent retail trade and we have already had a great response from our customers".
As their customers know, most of Babybase's success is due to the dedicated team of people who work there. Nikki, Kerry and Jill are usually who you will speak to when you place an order. They will answer questions and give stock information at the same time. In the warehouse Jane, Carol, Mandy, Kim and Nicola carefully pick your order and then pack it so that it arrives in good condition. John and Michael are busy unloading lorries and putting away the stock whilst Kate, Kirsty and David look after the other areas of the business including sourcing goods, writing the famous newsletters and balancing the books. Two members of staff have worked for the company for over ten years and that leads to a wealth of product and customer knowledge. "I know a lot of my customers very well" said Nikki "and talk to them on the phone on a regular basis. I know the kind of products they buy and what they will be interested in. That helps me look after them better and makes the job much more interesting".
Babybase is situated in rural Worcestershire in the beautiful village of Martley. Kate's family owns the trading estate on which they are situated which gives them access to as much storage space as they need. "It gives me the chance to buy in bulk at very good prices if the opportunity arises without having to worry about where we are going to store the stock" Kate said.
Babybase deals with a very wide range of customers of all sizes including internet only accounts and mail order catalogues. They are happy to deliver products direct to the end user on behalf of their customers and have recently started dealing with further afield accounts in the Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland.
When asked why she thought Babybase was successful and growing bigger all the time, Kate had no hesitation "Customer service is all important" she said "and we look after our customers the way we like being looked after ourselves. I'm not saying we never make a mistake but if we do, we put it right and apologise. I think that is what our customers value so highly."
