Taking the market by storm with a good night's sleep
Rob Holmes, Co-founder of The Gro Company, has been developing innovative nursery products for the past nine years and The Gro Company has gone from strength to strength. Rob and Ouv Holmes introduced the Grobag Baby Sleep Bag into the British market in the year 2000 and are proud to say they have changed the way UK parents put their babies to bed.

How it all started

Our story started back in the year 2000 when our first son Sam wouldn't sleep at night, which as most parents would probably know, is enough to send any sane person completely barmy! Then we were given a baby sleep bag by our Austrian sister-in-law and a miracle occurred: he slept through the night without wriggling out of his covers. We simply had to tell UK parents about our revelation so we came up with the idea of the Grobag Baby Sleep Bag.

Safety first

We wanted to make our Grobags as safe as possible so we worked in partnership with The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) to ensure we met their guidelines and all UK safety regulations and British Standards. As a result of our continued dedication to safety, Grobag is FSID's only Baby Sleep Bag specialist. We always give extra advice to ensure parents use our Grobags correctly and create a safer sleeping environment for their children.

Joyce Epstein, FSID Director said:

"We are delighted to be working with the team at Grobag, in what is our ninth year of collaboration. Rob and Ouvrielle came to us for safety advice 6 months before they launched Grobag and we were pleased to help them - it was obvious that safety was one of their main concerns from the start.

Not only do the Grobag Baby Sleep Bags meet all our requirements in terms of their design and construction, but we appreciate the extra steps that have been taken to ensure their sleep bags are used correctly by parents. For example, the free room thermometer that is supplied with every Grobag Baby Sleep Bag helps parents maintain the correct room temperature and on the reverse of the thermometer, parents are reminded of all the steps to make a safer sleeping environment for children.

Grobag were the first dedicated baby sleeping bag manufacturer to come to us and ask for extensive help in the development of their products and we have been very happy to work with them and look forward to working with them for many years to come."

It's getting hot in here

A recent survey we conducted showed that 61 per cent of new parents said that their biggest worry was ensuring the safe sleep of their baby and just under half of all parents (45%) said their concern over safe sleep is being able to monitor accurately the temperature of the room their baby sleeps in. Whilst awareness levels have been raised due to well publicised links between babies overheating and the increased risk of cot death, so have parents' fears increased in ensuring they provide the right sleeping environment for their child.

In response to this concern we invented the Gro-egg which highlights the child's room temperature at a glance so parents can adjust accordingly. The Gro-egg illuminates blue if the room temperature is too cold, therefore parents should increase the temperature or put their child in a higher tog Grobag if available. If the Gro-egg glows yellow then parents can rest assured the room their child sleeps in is the correct temperature. If the Gro-egg shines red then it's too hot, so parents can open a window or adjust their child's clothing appropriately.

Sssh don't wake the baby

Checking on children at night is all part of the job! Nappy changes, tantrums, sickness - whatever the reason - one thing which can be avoided is switching on a bright light and potentially disturbing the baby even more.  A soft, subtle lighting which creates a relaxing ambience is ideal when checking baby and tending to their needs. There's nothing worse than creeping over items on the floor and trying to be extremely quiet then ending up being even noisier! Our Gro-light solves this problem! It fits into any ceiling pendent light and gives off a comforting glow which is dim enough not to disturb but bright enough to help. It's designed so that sensitivity and LED brightness can be adjusted. We've had great reviews on this product as well as winning a Mother & Baby Gold Award in the Best Nursery Product category. Also, we conducted a study into how energy efficient our Gro-light is and, when illuminated, the Gro-light has very low power consumption - it costs just under £1 a year to run and can be used with low energy bulbs.

Joyce Epstein, Director of FSID, said; "It's important to check on your baby from time to time when they are sleeping.  The Gro-light provides an ideal low level of light to help you check on your baby without disturbing them."

More sleep please

The media tend to focus on sleep solutions for babies and there is lots of advice available for this age group. But when they get to toddler age it's harder to get them to stay in bed! We found that we gave parents three years of sleep solutions through our Grobag Baby Sleep Bag but then we were letting parents down by not offering them a product to keep toddlers in bed... so the Gro-clock was born. We are committed to developing innovative products that genuinely help solve parents' problems and this patented clock solves the age-old problem of communicating time to young children by using fun images of the sun and moon. Children love to be read bedtime stories before they sail off to sleep and many parents get into a routine of reading to their child before bedtime. So included in the Gro-clock is a story book called ‘Sleepy Farm' which reinforces the message to the child of having a good night's sleep.

Sleep deprivation affects all areas of life: mood, work capability, tolerance. Our aim is to develop innovative products to make children feel happy and secure all night long which in turn makes family life just that little bit easier.
