A new study by Trinity College Dublin has found that using a Clevamama Memory Foam Baby Pillow can reduce the risk of 'flat head syndrome' in young babies by up to 50%.
Researchers at Trinity College, Dublin investigated the biomechanics of contact between the back of a baby's skull, the softest and most malleable part of a baby's head and different supporting materials. The study found both lower stress distribution and lower strain energy density on a baby's head when using the Clevamama Memory Foam Baby Pillow compared with a generic infant mattress. The pillow reduced the pressure on the baby's cranium by almost 50%, while providing more than 80% more contact with the head.
Flat Head Syndrome or positional plagiocephaly is a disorder that affects a baby's skull, making the back or side of their head flat which can cause a misalignment of the ears and eyes. Since the introduction of the Back to Sleep campaign in 1992 in which parents were encouraged to position their babies on their backs while sleeping to help prevent cot death, the number of cases of flat head syndrome has risen significantly. Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London estimate that the incidence may be as high at 48%.
Martina Delaney, co-founder of Handy Baby Products which manufactures the Clevamama Memory Foam Baby Pillow said; "Many parents are worried about ‘flat head syndrome' and this can lead them to spend a lot of money on expensive treatments including helmet therapy where a baby must wear a specially designed helmet for up to 23 hours per day for several months. We are delighted that this research has indicated that Clevamama Memory Foam Baby Pillow can be an effective, inexpensive way to address the problem".
The breathable, lightweight Clevamama Memory Foam Baby Pillow is specifically designed to protect the round shape of a baby's soft head and offer optimum support. Incorporating the latest Airflow technology, the Clevamama Memory Foam Baby Pillow draws away moisture whilst increasing airflow to ensure ultimate comfort and protection for babies.
Commenting on the findings, Alexander Lennon Research Fellow from Trinity College said: "There has been little study so far into the biomechanics that cause deformational plagiocephaly. We believe this research is an important step and goes a long way to advancing our understanding of potential mechanisms and treatments for Flat Head Syndrome".
The research was undertaken by The Trinity Centre for bioengineering team for Handy Baby Products which manufactures the Clevamama Memory Foam Baby pillows.
