The perfect learning environment

Baby play mats and gyms are said to enhance both mental and physical development. The various points of interest encourage baby to focus on what they see, exploring the different textures, looking in the mirrors and listening to the sounds and music made by the toys when grasped.

Online consumer advice forum AskBaby.com describes a baby gym quite simply as an arch, either single or criss-crossed and made out of material or plastic, with small toys suspended from it. When baby is tiny he will only be able to focus on the toys, but as he gets older he will start to explore the gym with his hands and feet. Some baby gyms come with an integral play mat, so baby can feel the textures next to him as well as above. A huge benefit is that they provide a safe and interesting place for baby to play, in the home or garden.

Encouraging the development of sight, touch, sound, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, object performance, musical awareness, exercise, focus and self awareness, play mats should be promoted as a baby essential. Examples of play mats include colourful but simple mats, tummy and play time baby mats and activity gyms that are like tummy mats but with suspended activity panels. While complex in design, these activity mats are often foldable and machine washable, so even customers with limited space at home would benefit from such a purchase. Then there are others that do not come with a mat, but have the suspended panels, often made of wood or plastic.

Providing a stimulating environment, a play mat or gym will boost hand-eye co-ordination skills, encouraging baby to explore the world around him, while the parent has time to sit and relax.

In advice to the consumer, Babyworld says: “A versatile play mat or gym is key to providing longevity for you and your baby. Look for models that you know will stand the test of time with good accessories that you can move around to preserve your baby's interest. Good quality fabric that you can wipe clean is also important - your baby is going to sleep, eat and dribble on the mat so a few spills now and again is likely. If you travel a lot, a portable mat or gym that comes with its own bag will be beneficial.”

It is wise to stock a range that responds to each of these demands, ensuring your customer is clear on what the mat has to offer in terms of mental and physical development.
