Concept & Innovation Awards winners announced
Published:  19 October, 2011

The suspense was over for five budding baby product entrepreneurs on Monday as the Baby Products Association (BPA) announced the winners of its 2011 Concept and Innovation Awards at the Baby Show for Trade at London Olympia.

After much deliberation by judges who commended the outstanding innovation of all five entries, Sonia Day was chosen as winner of the Concept Award for Tooth Ticklers, a uniquely designed toothbrush specifically for babies and toddlers.

While there are existing toothbrushes on the market for children with variations in handle designs, these are generally smaller versions of adult toothbrushes which make cleaning little teeth unsatisfactory and fiddly. Tooth Ticklers have bristles all the way round the head so top and bottom teeth get brushed at the same time with different length bristles for hard to reach places. The ergonomically designed handle with a weighted bottom also ensures that Tooth Ticklers remain upright to keep the bristles away from unhygienic surfaces.

The Innovation Award, for products which have reached prototype stage, went to Susan Greeney and Jodi Bartle of Yoogobaby for their inflatable travel cot design.

This light-weight compact travel cot has an easy single point inflation point and built in compressible pump which allows the cot to be inflated and deflated in less than a minute. It is manufactured in thermo plastic polyurethane which is super strong and puncture resistant and when inflated forms a rigid anti-tip frame for the cot. When not in use it folds neatly away into a compact bag.

Both awards were presented by Simon Veale, director of leading parcel and carrier manager Global Freight Solutions (GFS) official sponsor of the BPA Concept & Innovation Awards. Simon commented: “We at GFS are very proud to sponsor these awards for the second year running and the five finalists here today are a shining example of the high standard of entries overall.

“However, these two entries stood out not only for their product design, but their business planning, commitment to their product and also visitor feedback during the Baby Show for Trade.”

Other finalists were Michael and Camilla Stock in the Concept category for a Twist and Shake devise which fits into a bottle and releases milk formula when required; and in the Innovation category, Karen Welman with a range of 37 Degrees temperature regulating baby clothing; and The Stairgate Company with a non-trip pressure fit stairgate.
